lovage cordialSix o’clock is gin o’clock time in my house. But not today. Today, I need something more warming and happily my home brewed alcoholic Lovage Cordial has just come of age. I made it a fortnight ago during the Great Lovage Glut of 2013 and it seems apt to crack it open today because I’m told it’s a good winter warmer. And boy am do I need warming. I’ve been at Thyme Cookery School today helping out on the veg patch that supplies the school and the nearby Swan pub and delightful though it was, it also chucked it down all day.

So now, dripping and soaked to the skin (yes, even through my Barbour), I clutch a little glass that is 1 part cordial to 3 parts brandy and take a sip. Not being a brandy drinker, I inevitably splutter at the first gulp. But after the initial shock, I do feel it warming my bones. It’s got a satisfying aromatic finish and leaves pleasingly warm glow in its wake. By the fourth sip I feel like an electric blanket has been draped over me by caring hands and I’m being ushered towards a crackling fire for a nap. Ooo, actually I quite fancy a snooze…

PS – after a nap, I feel this tipple could be a good warmer to see us through our un-seasonably soggy spring so I’m entering it in the rather lovely Simple and in Season blog event run by the equally lovely Ren Behan
